# Types of Acne: Whiteheads, Blackheads, Cystic Acne & More

**By balmukund Vats** · 2026-05-12

Have you ever noticed how not every breakout behaves the same way?

Some bumps stay tiny and disappear in two days. Some sit under the skin for a week and hurt every time you touch your face. Then there are those stubborn black dots around the nose that never seem to completely go away no matter how much cleansing you do.

And yet, most of us casually call all of it “acne.” That’s where a lot of skincare confusion begins. Because acne is not one single condition behaving in one single way. The breakout on your forehead after a humid day outside is very different from the painful jawline acne that appears around your periods. The tiny white bumps caused by clogged pores are not the same as deep cystic acne that leaves marks behind.

Once you start understanding these differences, skincare becomes far less frustrating. You stop randomly trying products and start recognising what your skin is actually asking for.

So, if acne has been following you indefinitely, then you need to first understand the types of acne, why certain breakouts happen, why some leave marks while others don’t, and why treating every pimple the same way rarely works.

## **Why Acne Does Not Always Look the Same**

One of the biggest misconceptions around acne is that it follows one pattern.

In reality, acne develops at different depths within the skin. Some forms stay close to the surface and appear as congestion or texture. Others involve deeper inflammation, which is why they feel painful, swollen, and difficult to heal.

Dermatology broadly divides acne types on face into two categories:

- non-inflammatory acne

- inflammatory acne

Non-inflammatory acne is usually the earlier stage of acne formation. It develops when pores become clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells, sunscreen residue, sweat, or environmental buildup. At this stage, there is blockage but very little inflammation inside the skin. The non-inflammatory acne usually appears as uneven texture, small bumps, congestion & blackheads and whiteheads.

Inflammatory acne develops when the clogged pore becomes irritated internally and triggers an immune response within the skin. At this point, the issue is no longer just trapped oil or dead skin. Inflammatory acne becomes red, swollen, painful and sensitive to touch.

## **Whiteheads and Blackheads: Different Types of Non-Inflammatory Acne**

For many people, acne starts here.

Whiteheads and blackheads develop when pores become clogged with oil, sweat, and dead skin cells. Since summer weather naturally increases sebum production, these are among the most common acne types on face during humid months.

**1\. Whiteheads**

Whiteheads are closed pores. The buildup remains trapped beneath the skin, which is why they appear as small white or skin-coloured bumps.

They usually feel more like uneven texture than inflamed acne and commonly appear around:

- the forehead

- cheeks

- chin

**2\. Blackheads**

Blackheads form differently.

Here, the pore remains open, which allows the trapped oil and debris to react with air. This oxidation process is what creates the dark appearance.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in the whiteheads vs blackheads conversation. The black colour is not dirt trapped inside the pore.

Blackheads are especially common around the nose because this area naturally produces more oil than the rest of the face. During summer, increased sweating and sunscreen layering often make them more visible.

## **Different Types of Inflammatory Acne**

Not all clogged pores stay calm. Once bacteria and inflammation become involved, acne starts behaving differently. Instead of just texture or congestion, the skin begins showing redness, swelling, and tenderness.

This is the key difference between inflammatory and non inflammatory acne.

Inflammatory acne usually develops deeper within the skin and is more likely to leave acne marks if repeatedly irritated or picked.

**1\. Papules**

Papules are small red bumps that develop when the walls around a clogged pore become inflamed. They do not contain visible pus. They often feel sensitive and appear in clusters during flare-ups.

In Indian summers, papules tend to increase because heat and sweat continuously irritate already congested skin.

**2\. Pustules**

Pustules are what most people casually refer to as pimples. They are inflamed breakouts with a visible white or yellow centre filled with pus. Although squeezing them may feel tempting, it usually worsens inflammation and increases the chances of post-acne marks.

**3\. Cystic Acne**
Among all different types of acne, cystic acne is usually the most frustrating to deal with. Unlike surface-level acne, cystic acne often feels sore even without touching it. It appears as:

- large painful bumps

- deep swelling beneath the skin

- breakouts that remain for days or weeks

This type of acne is commonly linked to hormonal fluctuations, excess sebum activity, chronic inflammation and genetic predisposition.

For many women, cystic acne tends to appear around the jawline and chin, especially around menstrual cycles.

## **Nodular Acne vs Cystic Acne: The Difference Most People Miss**

These two forms of acne are often confused because both develop deep beneath the skin.

However, there is a difference in structure.

Nodular acne appears as hard, inflamed lumps beneath the skin and usually does not contain fluid. Cystic acne, on the other hand, contains pus-filled pockets and tends to feel softer and more painful.

In the comparison between nodular acne vs cystic acne, cystic acne generally carries a higher risk of scarring because of the intensity of inflammation involved.

## **What is Hormonal Acne?**

Hormonal acne behaves differently from occasional breakouts. This hormonal acne type usually follows a pattern and commonly appears around the chin, jawline and lower cheeks.

Instead of appearing randomly, it often flares up around:

- menstrual cycles

- stress

- poor sleep

- hormonal fluctuations

What makes hormonal acne frustrating is not just the breakout itself, but its tendency to return repeatedly in the same areas.

### **Conclusion**

Acne becomes far less confusing once you stop looking at every breakout as the same problem. Some acne types are driven mainly by congestion. Others are deeply linked to inflammation or hormones. Some stay close to the surface, while others develop much deeper within the skin.

Understanding these differences does not just help with skincare choices. It changes the way you read your skin altogether.

### What are the different types of acne?

The main types of acne include whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, cystic acne, nodular acne, and hormonal acne. Each type develops differently and may require a different treatment approach.

###

### What is the difference between inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne?

Non-inflammatory acne includes whiteheads and blackheads caused by clogged pores without significant redness or swelling. Inflammatory acne includes papules, pustules, cysts, and nodules, which are red, swollen, and often painful.

###

### Which PNK products are suitable for different types of acne?

PNK Beauty's Evoaked Acne Series is designed to address multiple acne concerns:
